80% of the Indian farmers belong to the poor category. His poverty is famous all over the world. The Indian farmer is not able to get food for even two times properly, he is not able to get a piece of thick cloth. Indian farmers are not able to give education to their children, nor are they able to buy good clothes to their sons and daughters. He is unable to give his wife the pleasure of wearing jewellery.

Farmers’ wives also work at home and in the field. She cleans the gaushala, makes uplas out of cow dung, sticks them on the walls and dries them in the sun. It is used as fuel during the wet monsoon months. Indian farmers are harassed by village moneylenders and tax collectors. He is troubled by moneylenders and tax collectors, so he is unable to enjoy his own produce.

The Indian farmer did not even have a small house to live in. He lives in a hut of straw and thatch. There has been a lot of improvement in the condition of big farmers, the condition of small land holders and marginal farmers is still less than satisfactory. It would be better to say that the old farmers’ generation was not much educated or most of them were illiterate, but most of the new generation farmers are educated. Being educated helps them a lot. They get the soil of their fields tested in the laboratory.

In this way, they would know who would have the most crops in their fields. Indian farmer celebrates social function in the simplest possible way. He celebrates the festival with great pomp every year. He also celebrates the wedding of his sons and daughters with great pomp. He leaves no stone unturned to entertain his family and friends and neighbours. Beyond this, if the figures of the last few years are seen, then most cases of farmer suicides have been registered.

Farmer suicide is a situation arising after the year 1990 in which more than ten thousand farmer suicides are reported every year. Between 1997 and 2006, 166304 farmers committed suicide. It has been seen that Indian agriculture is largely dependent on the monsoon and for this reason, the failure of monsoon due to the destruction of cash crops has been considered as the main reason for the suicides of farmers.

Not only the failure of monsoon, but also drought, rising prices, excessive debt burden, etc., start a cycle of problems. Farmers in different parts of India have committed suicide by being trapped in the cycle of banks, moneylenders, middlemen etc.

One of the main reasons for the Indian farmers to reach the state of suicide is that the farming is economically harmful and unable to maintain the farmers and this is the reason why Shri Ganesh of the Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme was done by the Modi government in India.

In states like Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, the cost to farmers has increased very rapidly. The biggest increase has been in the expenditure on irrigation facilities. Due to the steep fall in the ground water level, the cost of borewells in these black spots has increased manifold and for this the size of the loan is increasing. When the figures of farmer suicides increased in Telangana, debt on borewells was a major reason for them.

Borewells were banned there due to falling water level and farmers were going to moneylenders due to non-availability of loans from banks. When there were reports of farmer suicides from Uttar Pradesh last year, the reason for that was thousands of crores of rupees due to the sugar mills of the farmers there. After that the situation has become worse, still the sugar mills of Uttar Pradesh owe about eight thousand crore rupees to the farmers.

There are a large number of farmers whose holding is two acres or less, but they have been able to get only partial payment of sugarcane price for two years. When the sugar mills went to the Supreme Court against the decision of the Allahabad High Court on the first charge of the farming community on sugar, the Supreme Court had decided in favor of the farmers.

The life of a common person is unimaginable without the farmer community, that is why we all should make small but small efforts for the farming community.
